Bibliographies, Reviews, and Other Handbooks

One of the most urgent questions a scholar may ask when beginning study of a particular topic is whether relevant bibliographies are available. In the case of Philo, we are blessed with several bibliographies, and each year new reviews of published works are issued in the Studia Philonica Annual.

Bibliographies

There is hardly another person from antiquity for whom we have available such extensive bibliographic works as Philo of Alexandria. These are like goldmines for researchers on any topic dealt with in the Philonic works and research. The following are the most relevant.24

Erwin R. Goodenough, The Politics of Philo Judaeus: Theory and Practice (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1938).

This volume contains as a second part “A General Bibliography of Philo” (pp. 124-321), which is an impressive resource collected by Howard L. Goodhart and Goodenough, covering manuscripts of Philo, editions and translations, bibliographies, general studies, studies of individual treatises, works on various doctrines of Philo, and much more. Some of these are annotated, and in some cases reviews are also mentioned. The lists are arranged chronologically under each heading.

Earle Hilgert, “Bibliographia Philoniana 1935-1981,” in ANRW 2.21.1 (1984) 47-97.

Roberto Radice, Filone di Alessandria: bibliografia generale 1937-1982 (Elenchos 8; Naples: Bibliopolis, 1983).

Roberto Radice and David T. Runia, Philo of Alexandria: An Annotated Bibliography, 1937-1986 (VCSup 8; Leiden: Brill, 1988).

This work originated as an English translation of the above-mentioned Italian work of Roberto Radice. In addition, a team of scholars was engaged in compiling supplementary material to make it as comprehensive as possible.

David T. Runia, ed., Philo of Alexandria: An Annotated Bibliography, 1987-1996 (VCSup 57; Leiden: Brill, 2000).

This volume is a continuation of the 1988 volume by Radice and Runia (2nd ed. 1992). Prepared by the editor with the collaboration of the members of the International Philo Bibliography Project, it contains an almost complete listing of all scholarly writings on Philo in most languages for the period 1987 to 1996. Part one lists texts, translations, commentaries, etc. (seventy-five items). Part two contains critical studies (880 items). Part three presents additional works for 1937-86 (170 items). A brief description of the contents is provided for each.

David T. Runia, ed., Philo of Alexandria: An Annotated Bibliography, 1997-2006 (VCSup 109; Leiden: Brill, 2012).

A further compilation by Runia in collaboration with the International Philo Bibliography Project: E. Birnbaum, K. A. Fox, A. C. Geljon, M. R. J. Hofstede, H. M. Keizer, J. P. Martín, M. S. Niehoff, R. Radice, J. Riaud, K.-G. Sandelin, D. Satran, G. Schimanowski, T. Seland, and D. Zeller. Part one lists texts, translations, commentaries, etc. (58 items). Part two contains critical studies (1024 items). Part three includes additional works for 1987-96 (42 items). In all cases a brief description of the contents is given.

The International Philo Bibliography Project continues to publish extensive annotated bibliographies each year in Studia Philonica Annual, for example:
